Alex Scott's Lemonade Stand

Okay. So you know how I love heroes, right? Well, I want to tell you about another hero of mine and her name was Alexandra Scott. One of the reasons why I want to tell you about her is so that you will understand just how important a positive attitude is when life is hard.

When Alexandra was almost one year old, the doctors told her mom and dad that she had neuroblastoma. That’s a kind of cancer.

They said she would never walk again. Guess what? They were wrong. Alex worked hard and she did walk again.

The day after her fourth birthday, Alex had a stem cell transplant. While she was in the hospital, Alex told her mom, “When I get out of the hospital, I want to start a lemonade stand.” Alex said she wanted to give the money she made to the doctors to help them, “help other kids the way they helped me.”

My little hero did have a lemonade stand and guess what? She donated $2,000.00 to “her hospital” that year. (Her her hospital is Childrens’ Hospital in Philadelphia. My human brother had bone surgery in the same hospital. His picture is in my book.)

She kept fighting her own cancer as she had more lemonade stands. The word spread and lots of people started other lemonade stands. Guess what? Alex’s lemonade foundation managed to donate another one million dollars to research childhood cancer.

Lemonade is part of summer and now thanks to Alex it’s part of every season.  So, if you have any problems this summer, remember Alex and what she was able to accomplish. You can  be just as strong as Alex Scott with the right attitude.

So every time you have lemonade, think of Alex and Christopher Reeve, my heroes because they turned those old lemons into lemonade and lemonade stands. Both of them have foundations to help doctors learn how to help kids with cancer and spinal cord injuries and that’s why I love them.
