Good Sportsmanship Lives In Armando Galarraga & Jim Joyce

Boy pitching

Did you hear about Armando Galarraga and Jim Joyce? If you didn’t, I’ll tell you about them ‘cuz they are my heroes today.

Armando is a baseball pitcher and Jim is an umpire. During a recent baseball game, Armando Galarraga retired the first 26 batters he faced. The 27th hit a grounder to the infield, which the second baseman blocked and threw the runner  out while the pitcher covered first base. The first base umpire miscalled the play and said the runner was safe.

When Jim Joyce saw the TV replay, he admitted that he made a mistake and apologized to Armando Galarraga.

Guess what? People do make mistakes and that’s okay. It’s owning up to your mistakes, what you learn from them and what you do afterward that counts. Don’t you agree?

It is so cool to see a professional ball player set such a great example of  good sportsmanship for kids. Even though the umpire made an incorrect call, pitcher Armando Galarraga of the Detroit Tigers acted like a gentleman.

I think that the umpire and the pitcher were so awesome because they didn’t let their egos get in the way of good sportsmanship. I think these two guys are the kind of people all pros should be.
