Summertime Dangers

Boy in fancy clothes

Hi! Well it’s almost time for summer and that means school is over soon and kids are getting ready for sleep away camp, day camp, town recreation, pool clubs, the YMCA or summer day care. It’s very important to be prepared for a few things when your bag is packed. You need to talk to the adults in your life to ask them to help.

If you were teased or bullied in school this year, it could happen this summer too. Here’s the thing: You need to pack clothes that won’t make you stand out from the other kids. If there are uniforms to wear, that makes it easy ‘cuz then you won’t stand out.  You know that I want to have kids be proud of their differences but when kids are bullied, some of my rules need to change a bit.

Tell the adults who are helping you pack that you have been bullied. Hopefully they already know but in case they don’t, now is the time to fill them in.

Here is a funny story. When my human cousin was little, he came to visit my mom during the summer. She bought some really nice clothes for him to wear on the flight home. He said he wanted to wear his old clothes but she insisted that he wear the new ones. As soon as he boarded the plane, he went into the restroom and took off the new clothes which included knee socks that matched his shirt. He put on his old clothes and shoved the new ones into the trash bin.

My mom didn’t find out for years. In fact, he was in twenties when he told her. He explained that he would have been teased so badly when his friends came to pick him from the airport. He didn’t want to look adorable. He wanted to fit in.

My next few post are going to suggest some other things to help you with Summertime.
