Parents, what do you know about epilepsy and what do you know about bullies? Who do you know who might have epilepsy? Who do you know who might be a bully?
Here is some important information that you should know because an epileptic could be someone you know.
Epileptics have seizures because there is a malfunction in the brain. Instead of sending the energy in a specific manner, the braincells keep misfiring.
Seizures happen when the electrical system of the brain malfunctions. Instead of discharging electrical energy in a controlled manner, the brain cells keep firing. The result is that the surge of energy might cause unconsciousness and or contractions in the muscles.
In lesser degrees, memory might be fuzzy with awareness, make the person incapable of talking and or produce many different types of uncontrolled or unorganized movements in the body.
Most of the time seizures only last about a minute or two but the confusion lasts longer.
Kids with epilepsy are usually afraid that their classmates might find out and bully them. They often suffer from low self esteem.
People who have epilepsy often have no seizure triggers, others are able to recognize things in their lives that do affect their seizures. Usually, the most frequent cause of an unexpected seizure is failure to take the medication as prescribed. Other factors include ingesting substances, hormone fluctuations, stress, sleep patterns and photo sensitivity. These kids are scared when the seizures happen and so are the people who witness the seizure of a person.
Bullying targets have been associated with poor social skills, poor self esteem and depression. This can and does go hand in hand with kids who have epilepsy. Teachers and parents, please explain this to your students or kids. It might make a huge difference in the life of a kid with epilepsy!
