Any kind of predator, seeks a vulnerable victim. Parents, if you do anything to protect your children, teach them about vulnerability and how they can protect themselves.
There are many ways that parents can give their children defenses against predators. Those of you who are uncomfortable discussing the “birds and the bees” with your children…suck it up! You are the parents and your children need you to protect them. Discussing the facts with your children might save their lives.
Vital Steps To Protect Your Children
1. Teach your children the proper anatomical names of their body parts. Use the correct words for these body parts and expect them to do the same. (As an example, if a child mentions that somebody played with a “ne-ne,” a responsible adult may not understand the importance of what the child said. You can bet that if the word vagina is used, an adult will tune in!)
2. Explain to your child that his or her body is only theirs. Let them know that it’s okay to say, “Don’t touch me.”
3. Teach your older children that they can select an appropriate adult-one you approve of-who they can confide in. There may be times that they will be more comfortable going to another adult with a particular issue. (Parents, put your egos in your back pocket. This is not about you.)
4. Explain the fact that adults or older kids should not do things and expect your children keep those actions a secret. Make sure that your children understand that if they share an adult’s secret with a responsible adult, it is the right thing to do.
5. Make sure that your children know your cell phone number. Even the youngest ones can memorize ten digits. (Use a melody to help the young ones remember the 10 digits.)
Parents, this is serious. This is a potential danger for your children. Step up to the plate and don’t risk your children’s safety because of your discomfort.
