Victims Can Be Rivals

Too often bullying has become a means by which some kids can increase their  popularity. Studies are showing the fact that the rungs on the ladders leading to high school popularity are often covered with the thorns of cruelty.

Bullying events that have been publicized have involved kids that were bullied into isolation -  Some of whom took their own lives or the lives of others to escape the pain.

The new findings that were published in The American Sociological Review are interesting because they present a different observation.

Their findings show that different forms of assault and victimization occur among a large number of  students as they attempt to climb higher on the popularity ladder.

This study offers the possibility that the kids who are being targeted may well be rivals of the kids who are doing the bullying. Taking a rival out of the competition for popularity strengthens the bully’s likelihood of climbing higher on the  “popularity ladder.”
