Why Parents Can’t Say No

Do you want to do a disservice to your children? If you do not say no, do not give consequences, are not consistent or are not predictable in your actions, you do a disservice to your children.

Reasons why parents do not say no

  • Some parents just want to be popular.
  • Some parents are just lazy.
  • Some parents just don’t get how to parent.
  • Some parents are just motivated by guilt.
  • Some parents are just motivated by keeping up with the Jones’s – Not this Jones! ;-)

Each and every one of these reasons is the issue of the parent. It is of utmost importance that parents do some soul searching. Parents must try to figure out why they are not parenting appropriately.

It is easier to deny or ignore poor behavior than to give consequences. Parents must not parent with guilt as a basis. If divorce, low income or long work hours are part of a family’s scenario, parents need to suck it up and not use any of these as an excuse for poor parenting.

Parents are not helping children when they say yes constantly or inappropriately.  Children who understand boundaries, succeed in becoming emotionally healthy adults. Parents who don’t have the courage, tenacity or confidence to parent properly, raise children who feel entitled and have poor coping skills.

If you love your kids, say no appropriately! It’s so difficult. I get that but it’s so important.
