Will What You Don’t Know Hurt Your Kids?

So many parents are under the misapprehension that their children are obeying their every word all of the time. Kids are unbelievably resourceful and the sooner parents understand that fact, the better off both the children and the parents will be.

These are a few of the comments that parents have made to me recently. Each and every one of these parents found out that they were sadly mistaken.

  • Oh, I don’t worry about that. He isn’t allowed on Facebook.
  • I monitor all of her online activities. There is no way she could do that.
  • He doesn’t like the taste of beer. He would never drink.
  • She doesn’t even know where we keep the liquor.
  • She would never bully anyone.
  • Oh, we don’t worry about that. She doesn’t even like boys.
  • He would never cheat. He knows what would happen if he did.

Here is a picture that will save me a thousand words. This young girl was told she couldn’t have a horse. Her parents may have something like, Oh we don’t worry about her jumping over anything. After all, she doesn’t even have a horse!

The old saying, Necessity is the mother of invention holds true with children of all ages. In this case a young girl figured out a way to get to do what she wanted to do in spite of the fact that her parents wouldn’t permit her to have a horse.

Parents please think about this picture when you think or say things like, Oh I don’t worry about that. She would never…
