The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation: Heroes Yet Again!

This is a post that I want to shout out from the rooftops and everywhere else! As most of you know, The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation is very important to us here.

Everyone who knew about Christopher Reeve and the spinal cord injury that he suffered, watched his courage and his desire to help others with SCIs. The best part of this post is that there is new hope for everyone who has suffered from spinal cord injuries. The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation and all of the people connected with The Foundation are our heroes!

So this is the story. A man by the name of Rob Summers, suffered a spinal cord injury when he was stuck by a hit and run driver when he was in college. He was paralyzed from the waist down.  His doctors told him that he would never walk again five years ago. They were wrong!

Guess what? He just stood up and walked!!!

For those of you who have been depressed because you suffered a spinal cord injury, there is hope! If would like more details, you will find them in the journal Lancelot. Basically, the findings are that signals from the brain are not needed to walk!!!

Rob Summers is the first person in the entire world to stand up after being paralyzed from the waist down. Basically the procedure was done by implanting an electrical stimulator at the base of his spine that allowed his legs to move without any direction from his brain.

Rob is quoted as saying, “It’s that moment that continues to give me the hope for tomorrow, and the future for this project – and helping out millions of other people in my same situation.”

Rob is the first patient to have this therapy and now he can stand. How amazing will it be when each additional spinal cord injured patient walks for the first time?

This is absolutely mind boggling and the happiness I feel as I write is beyond words. For all of you kids and parents with SCI’s, now there is such hope.
