This post is right from the horse’s…ahem…dog’s mouth…Rugby Jones!
I have a bone to pick with Merriam-Webster Dictionary because I don’t like to be labeled. I especially don’t like being labeled with something that doesn’t make me feel good about myself. One of those dumb old labels is that disabled word.
Okay, okay…so my back legs don’t work and I need “Zoomie” to help me get around. Does that mean I am disabled? It certainly does not!!
Good old Merriam-Webster really goofed when they said that the definition of disabled is: incapacitated by illness or injury; also : physically or mentally impaired in a way that substantially limits activity especially in relation to employment or education.
The right way to put the definition out there for all to see is my way. I’m sure you will agree. Don’t you think this is way better?
Disability-This word is no longer in use. It was removed from the English language and this dictionary in 2011 because it had a negative connotation and created a poor self image in individuals who were unique.
Thanks to Rugby Jones…moi…a different and more appropriate word is now in use.
Dif-Ability- Anyone’s physical, mental or emotional difference that require a utilization of diverse and creative techniques to achieve superior accomplishments. Great examples are on the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation website because the dads mentioned there are exactly the kind of people who are dif-abled. They prove the reasoning that the word disabled should be tossed. These men are dif-abled Super Dads!
Hey! That is the perfect definition! Don’t you agree?

You have a GREAT point here! Keep up your AWESOME works… RICH :0)
Coming from you that sure means a lot! Thank you.
